Please join us in a welcoming Geena Davis in conversation with Brenda Chapman and Katherine Sarafian of Pixar Animation Studios for a lively discussion about women's representation in film, both on screen and behind it.

Geena Davis is an Academy-award winning actress who’s gone from THELMA AND LOUISE to COMMANDER IN CHIEF in her roles on the screen. She embodies iconic female characters that play an active role in their destinies. Beyond her work as an actress, she’s also started her own Institute to study the history of women’s portrayal in media, See Jane and serves on the California Commission on the Status of Women. Davis felt a call to action was needed after seeing how few female characters appeared in the television programs and films that she watches with her children.  She created the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media to work with entertainment creators and companies, educate the next generation of content-creators, and inform the public about the need to increase the number of girls and women in media aimed at kids and to reduce stereotyping of both males and females.

Brenda Chapman is director of the upcoming Pixar Animation Studios film, BRAVE. She is also a member of the studio's senior creative team.  Prior to coming to Pixar in 2003, Chapman worked at The Walt Disney Company on films such as BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, THE LION KING, and THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. She also directed THE PRINCE OF EGYPT for Dreamworks. She studied art in junior college and attended the animation program at CalArts.

Katherine Sarafian has held a variety of key production positions during her tenure at Pixar Animation Studios, culminating in the role of producer on the upcoming feature, Brave.   Sarafian joined Pixar in 1994 as a production coordinator on Toy Story and thereafter worked in a wide variety of departments and roles on A Bug’s Life, Monster’s Inc., The Incredibles and the short film Lifted.  Sarafian holds a Master of Arts degree in Film and Television Critical Studies and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies from University of California, Los Angeles.  She has taught undergraduate film and television courses and has represented Pixar at a variety of film festivals throughout Japan, Europe and the United States. A native of Oakland, California, Sarafian is active in the San Francisco Bay Area theater, music and arts communities.  She serves on the boards of Lunafest and the San Francisco Armenian Film Festival.
