New Frontiers: West Coast Queer Cinema

"In our present imaginations, cinematic representations of queerness must transcend the lenses and portrayals and framings of dominant heterosexual gaze. That is a gaze that represents a homogenized queerness as it is assumed to be, via tropes or stereotypes, rather than the multiplicity of queernesses in their diversity. In these new frontiers, cinematic queernesses exist as a politic of self-representation and social-political imaginings: narrative, documentary, and avant-garde filmmaking that illustrates worlds that presently exist could one day exists, or even fantastical worlds that can exist only in our imaginations. But all of these worlds are important, all of these queer potentials are important, all of these imaginaries are liberatory."

Zoé Samudzi

CineArte: A Latin@ Queer Festival was created to promote LGBTQ filmmakers and artists by showcasing films, art and music from the United States, Latin America and IberoAmerica. The Festival, a program of the Los Angeles LGBT Center, celebrates the work of established and emerging Latino LGBTQ talent to inform and educate on the issues impacting the Latino LGBTQ community.
